Troop Guide

General

·        The Troop Guide reports to the Training Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and coordinates with the New Scout Assistant Scoutmaster.

·        Troop Guide is a key position requiring a minimum of 70% attendance.  If you are unable to perform a job function, it is your responsibility to find and designate a trained and qualified replacement, and to notify the Training Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of the change before the date of that function.

·        As a key Troop position, you must meet the highest standards for attitude, attendance, and appearance.  You must exemplify the Scout Oath and Law.

·        If more than one Troop Guide is appointed the New Scout Patrol Assistant Scoutmaster will designate a head Troop Guide who will be responsible to coordinate and direct the remaining assistant Troop Guides.

·        The Head Troop Guide is a member of the Patrol Leaders Council.

Upon election

·        Coordinate with previous Troop Guide to ensure uninterrupted continuation of Troop Guide scheduling.  Troop Guides should be assigned for six months in advance after adoption of the calendar.

·        Identify the goals for your position and for your personal advancement.  These goals will be listed as short term, three months, and long term, six months.  The goals must be measurable, achievable and meaningful.

One Time

·        Be present at the Junior Leader Training planning conference.

·        Help identify skills needed for planned activities during the Junior Leader Training planning conference.

Monthly

·        If Head Troop Guide participate in the Patrol Leaders Council Meetings, generally held at 6:00PM prior to the first Monday meeting.

·        Advise New-Scout Patrol leader on his duties and his responsibilities at patrol leaders’ council meetings.

Weekly

Head Troop Guide

·         Follow up on weekly basis to ensure assistant troop guides are scheduled to support the assigned patrol for each troop meeting.
·         Conduct, with the Instructor and Patrol Leader, a post-skill session evaluation after every skill session.
·         Assist with discipline as outlined by the Patrol Leaders Council.

Assistant Troop Guide

·         Be available for advancement requirements during the inter-patrol activity.
·         Assist the Patrol Leader to organize his patrol during Patrol Corners.
·         Meet the Patrol Leader after every meeting to evaluate patrol performance.  Emphasize organization, discipline, patrol spirit, and program quality.
·         If the new boy patrol has been assigned a skill session attend each development stage for the skill session.
·         If patrol is scheduled for skill session, assist the Patrol Leader in the development of the skill session planning sheet no less than two weeks prior to scheduled planning session.
·         If patrol is scheduled for skill session, assist the Patrol Leader to ensure material has been gathered one week before the session and has conducted a brief rehearsal.
·         If patrol is scheduled for skill session, meet at 6:30 PM on the night of the skill session, for final rehearsal.
·         Be prepared to assist the assigned Patrol Leader with the skill session.
·         Participate in the evaluation with the Patrol Leader after every meeting.
·         Assist the Patrol Leader with discipline as outlined by the Patrol Leaders Council.

As Needed

·        Help assigned Scouts meet advancement requirements through First Class.

·        Prevent harassment of new Scouts by older Scouts.

·        Help assistant Scoutmaster train new patrol leader when he is elected.

·        Guide new Scouts through early troop experiences to help them become comfortable in the troop and the outdoors.
