Operations Assistant Senior Patrol Leader

General

·        The Operations Assistant Senior Patrol Leader reports to the Senior Patrol Leader and coordinates with the Scoutmaster.

·        Operations Assistant Senior Patrol Leader is a key position requiring a minimum of 70% attendance.  Due to the nature of your position, close to 100% attendance will be anticipated with few exceptions.  If you are unable to perform a job function, it is your responsibility to find and designate a trained and qualified replacement, and to notify the Senior Patrol Leader of the change before the date of that function.

·        As a key Troop position, you must meet the highest standards for attitude, attendance and appearance.  You must exemplify the Scout Oath and Law.

·        Function as a member of the Patrol Leaders Council.

Upon election

·        Make yourself available to your subordinates to assist them in the development and finalization of their goals.

·        Obtain schedules from Head Quartermaster for the semi-annual troop/patrol inventory and field repair days.

·        Obtain schedule from librarian for the semi-annual inventory.

·        Obtain schedule from Chaplains Aide for the semi-annual religious award training[1].

·        Obtain schedule from Historian for Court of Honor planning.

·        Provide calendar changes listed above to the scoutmaster for inclusion on troop calendar.

·        Identify the goals for your position and for your personal advancement.  These goals will be listed as short term, three months, and long term, six months.  The goals must be measurable, achievable and meaningful.

One Time

·        Be present at the Junior Leader Operations planning conference.

Monthly

·        Participate in the Patrol Leaders Council Meetings, generally held at 6:00PM prior to the first Monday meeting of the month.

·        During the Patrol Leaders Council Meetings report the following position status:

·         Provide Quartermasters report on troop and patrol inventory maintenance[2].
·         Provide Librarians’ report on resource availability and usage.
·         As appropriate, comment on the status of the Historians Court of Honor planning.
·         Provide a brief evaluation of the success of the Quartermaster (patrol and troop levels), Scribe, Cheermaster, and Chaplains Aide efforts for the last troop activity[3].

·        Verify the Troop Scribe will be present 45 minutes before departure on the night of the Troop Activity.  Remind him to arrive with extra permission slips, clip board, and camping log envelope (from Assistant Scoutmaster Vern Gebben or his designee).  He is to mark the camping log envelope for attendance, collect the gas money and permission slips and submit them to appropriate adult leaders.

·        Verify the Head Troop Quartermaster has arranged coverage at the preload, departure night, and unload on Sunday.  Remind the Head Troop Quartermaster that Quartermasters shall arrive 15 minutes early on preload and departure night and begin loading upon arrival.

·        Verify through the Troop Quartermaster that all Quartermasters are identifying and verifying[4] required equipment on the Monday before the troop activity.

·        Verify the Troop Scribe is recording notes, and repeating the minutes from the previous, Patrol Leaders Council meeting.

·        Verify the Troop Historian is maintaining the camping log.

·        Verify the Cheermaster has designated a Master of Ceremony and the Patrol Cheermasters are planning for the Troop activity campfire.

·        Verify the Chaplain’s Aide is prepared to conduct the religious service.

·        Update the Operations Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders quickview form.  This form is to assist you in tracking your responsibilities and for reporting at the Patrol Leaders Council.

Weekly

·        Support the Senior Patrol Leader in controlling the performance of the group, with specific emphasis on supporting the Troop Guides with the new scout patrols.

·        Recommend personnel changes of assigned subordinates to the Senior Patrol Leader if required.

As Needed

·        Help with leading meetings and activities as called upon by the senior patrol leader.

·        Take over troop leadership in the absence of the senior patrol leader.

·        Perform any additional tasks assigned by the senior patrol leader.



[1] Religious award training is approximately 5 minutes in length and can be schedule on almost any day.

[2] The status report will indicate if an inventory is taking place at the troop and patrol levels and if items are being damaged or lost.

[3] Remember to focus only on the support actives conducted by these positions, not on the outing overall.  The evaluation should have been conducted with the scouts in the effected positions prior to the Patrol Leaders Council meeting.

[4] This includes inventory and inspection of all required equipment.
